The job
Answer "how much of today was 0DTE" with a number that is not quietly exaggerated.
What this recipe computes
- Same-day-expiry share of contracts and of premium for SPX, SPXW, SPY and QQQ.
- The 0DTE contract and premium totals behind those shares.
- The same split per root.
What it does not claim
- The contract share is not "0DTE is most of the market" — same-day options are cheap and trade in size.
- Scoped to the index complex, where daily expiry exists; it is not a whole-market figure.
- It measures activity, not positioning or dealer exposure.
How to read it
Step 1
Compare the two shares
Contracts runs far above premium. The gap is the whole point.
Step 2
Check the roots
SPXW carries SPX’s same-day expiries and is shown separately rather than folded in.
Step 3
Look at the trend
The 0DTE Share Tracker follows the same measure across a session window.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 0DTE really most of options volume?
- By contract count in the index complex it is a large share. By premium it is far smaller, because each same-day contract carries little value. Quoting only the contract share overstates it.
- Why only SPX, SPXW, SPY and QQQ?
- Those are the roots with daily expiries. Averaging across thousands of single names that list no same-day expiry would dilute the number into meaninglessness.

- Option flowOption flow is the time-and-sales stream of options prints: contract, size, premium, and inferred aggressor side.
- Open interest (OI)Open interest is how many options contracts remain open. Unlike volume, it does not reset each morning and usually updates after the session.
Related personas
- GEX and Option Flow for Index TradersIndex traders care about session character: where call/put walls sit, whether gamma is dampening or amplifying, and whether premium is chasing or fading the move.
- Real-Time Option Flow for ScalpersScalping with options flow is attention management. KPI cards and tight filters shrink the tape to tradable bursts; structure is a quick invalidation check, not a multi-hour thesis.
- Options Flow for Day TradersDay traders need speed with a filter: see what is printing now, rank what is unusual, then validate structure before risking capital. TradingFlow is built for that same-session loop.
