Symbol Research: Read One Symbol's Flow, GEX, Vol and Chain

Research one stock, ETF or index in TradingFlow: open the symbol, check its session, then read Overview, Flow, Positioning, GEX, Vol and Chain without overreading any one view.

Symbol Research is the page for one stock, ETF or index. That asset is the underlying: the thing its options are written on. Open this page when you already have a name and want to see what its options market shows. If you do not have a name yet, start with Rank Symbols.

All six views need a valid trial or paid plan, and eligible new accounts get seven days without a card. Guests are asked to sign in first and see no market data here.

Try it on SPY in five minutes

  1. Open the page. Click Symbols in the top navigation. It opens SPY. You should see the symbol's name, a line such as Session 2026-10-30 · Structure built Oct 30, 2026, 5:40 PM ET, and six tabs.
  2. Note the session. Every number on the page describes the session on that line, so check it before you read anything else.
  3. Find the levels. On Overview, find the Call Wall, Put Wall and Gamma Flip lines on the price chart. These are modeled levels, explained in Option Chain and OI and Greeks and GEX. They are not prices that must hold.
  4. Read the structure. Click GEX. Read the regime label, such as Negative gamma, then What matters near price: the nearest level above and below, and how far away each one is.
  5. Compare with the flow. Click Flow and press Load flow evidence. Each wall gets a status: Flow-aligned, Flow-against or Mixed. Open Why this status? to see the numbers behind it.
  6. Write down what you know. One line each: what the data showed, what you are inferring from it, and what would change your mind.

None of these views predicts price or proves who traded or why. They show what printed and what a model estimates from the option chain.

Other ways to open a symbol

  • Search: click Search ticker or company at the top, or press ⌘K (Ctrl+K on Windows), then pick a name.
  • Home: in Your symbols (Popular symbols when signed out), click a symbol for Overview, or Vol, GEX or Chain to go straight there.
  • Rank: in Rank Symbols, click a row, its ticker chip or an Inspect icon. The page opens over the table, and Back returns to the same sort, filters, page and scroll.

Read the header first

Symbol Research for SPY on the Overview view: the session line, the six views, and the price chart with GEX levels Test app, Symbol Research for SPY, session of Oct 20, 2026 (captured Oct 21). The session line names the represented session and when its structure was built; Overview draws the Call Wall, Put Wall, and Gamma Flip on the price chart.

  • Session line: the session the page represents, and separately when its structure was built. Flow and structure are different data with different clocks, as The Data Feed explains.
  • Go to Latest: appears on a pinned past session and takes you back to the latest one. A pinned session is closed, so its numbers stay put.
  • Refresh snapshot: reloads the page's data now. On the latest session during market hours the page also refreshes by itself, except while its tab is hidden.
  • Ask AI: opens TradingFlow AI on what you are looking at.

Overview: price and levels

Overview shows the session's price and candles. Choose a candle interval from 1m to D, and use Chart options to add Max Pain, VWAP (the session's volume-weighted average price), or the prior day's high and low. Market cap and average stock volume appear when the underlying has them, so an index shows N/A rather than $0.

Flow: session flow at the GEX walls

Flow answers a specific question: did this session's option flow lean toward the Call Wall, toward the Put Wall, or neither?

  1. Read the session totals at the top. Delta Exposure (DEX) explains the directional numbers.
  2. Watch Live prints on the latest session during market hours. You should see the newest 50 prints for this symbol, newest first. Filter by minimum premium ($10K, $50K or $100K, or All) and by calls, puts or both. Pause freezes the list while the count keeps running, and Resume shows what arrived. The panel only counts what printed after it connected, and your filter is not saved.
  3. Press Load flow evidence to fetch the wall comparison. It loads only when you ask for it.

Flow view: session flow measured against the mapped Call and Put GEX walls Captured Aug 13, 2026, when this view opened as a panel over Rank; it is now its own page, so the panel's controls and top navigation look different. It shows what Load flow evidence loads: each wall with its own Net DEX and a Flow-aligned, Flow-against or Mixed status.

  • Selected-range GEX profile: Call and Put GEX by strike, with the Put Wall, Structure Spot and Call Wall marked.
  • Wall cards: one each for the Put Wall and Call Wall, with the status, the Net DEX behind it, matched contracts, observed prints and open-interest coverage. Why this status? explains the read. This is descriptive evidence, never a forecast that a wall will hold or break.
  • 30-session flow history: the symbol's daily trend, collapsed by default. It covers the whole symbol rather than the wall scope, and it appears only on the latest session.

For the full tape with filters, alerts and export, use Open Option Trades. See Option Trades.

Positioning: where open interest sits

Open interest (OI) is how many contracts are still open. It is a snapshot from the chain, not a live count of today's trades.

  • Max Pain & OI by Strike shows the full chain. Use Show all strikes to widen it.
  • OI Surface — Today vs Prior Session compares two snapshots; switch with Today and Prior session. It covers traded contracts, not every quoted contract.

Option Chain and OI explains how to read a change in OI, and why it does not tell you who opened or closed.

GEX: what matters near price

  1. Pick a scope: All expirations, Today · 0DTE (options expiring today), Weekly · 1–7 days or Monthly · 8–31 days. Each button shows its share of all-expiration exposure. Flow's wall comparison uses the same scope.
  2. Read What matters near price, also called the Level Map: the nearest level above price, a node exactly at price if one exists, the nearest level below, and the Flip, where the modeled gamma regime changes. Levels on the same strike merge into one labeled node (Call Wall, Put Wall, Gamma Magnet, 0DTE Top or Max Pain), shown with its distance in dollars, percent and Daily ATR (the symbol's average daily range).
  3. Check the chart: Price & GEX Levels draws those levels on candles. Choose which ones appear with Spot, walls & flip, Magnet, Max Pain and 0DTE.
  4. Go deeper only if you need to: Exposure breakdown and Evidence library hold GEX by strike, expiry structure, 0DTE focus and the GEX ladder.

The ⓘ beside a term opens its definition. GEX is a modeled reading tied to the displayed session and expiry scope. It is not a price forecast or an observation of what dealers actually hold. Greeks and GEX covers how to read it.

Vol: implied vs. realized, and the surface

Vol separates two questions: is volatility high or low for this name now, and what does the whole surface look like.

  • IV Rank and IV Percentile are one-year context. Skew (how IV differs across strikes) and term slope (how it differs across expirations) carry their own date, so do not read a longer-horizon number as a same-day one.
  • IV30 against RV20 and RV30 compares what options are pricing (30-day implied volatility) with what the stock actually did (realized volatility over the last 20 or 30 sessions). The gap is a reason to ask why they differ, not a mispricing signal.
  • The IV surface is built from contracts seen trading in the session. Each cell is Measured, Interpolated or Unsupported, so you can tell observation from estimate. Expand opens the 3D view. Missing observations stay unavailable rather than being filled in.

Chain: one expiration at a time

Pick an expiration. You should see the contracts that traded at it, with the session's bid and ask. Research call and Research put open that exact contract in Contract Research.

Full-chain structure starts collapsed. It covers the whole chain's OI and GEX, while the traded table covers only contracts that traded, and each is labeled with its own coverage. If an expiration is missing from one of them, that table says so instead of showing a different expiration.

Share a view or pin a session

Every view has its own link, such as https://app.tradingflow.com/app/symbols/SPY?tab=gex. Add &tradingDate=YYYY-MM-DD to pin a past session. Anyone without access signs in and chooses a plan first, then lands on the same symbol.
