OI Change Rank: Spot Where Smart Money Is Building and Unwinding
OI Change Rank ranks the full equity universe by open-interest build and unwind across six modes and two lookback windows — with KPI cards, four drawer tabs, and OI composition analysis so you understand not just how much OI changed, but where it concentrated.
OI Change Rank in TradingFlow is a snapshot-based ranking app that answers: which symbols are seeing the largest shifts in open interest? You get a ranked universe of equities and ETFs sorted by how much their open interest has grown or shrunk versus prior sessions, four KPI summary cards, and a per-symbol drawer with four tabs of drill-down detail.
What OI Change Rank shows
The app is built on T+1 option-chain snapshots: data comes from the prior trading session's close, not live intraday ticks. This is labeled clearly throughout the app so you always know what data horizon you're working with.
OI rankings compare option-chain snapshots from prior trading sessions (T+1), not live intraday updates.
- Ranked universe — All symbols sorted by your chosen OI metric, with sortable columns for current OI, prior OI, absolute change, and percentage change over 1-day and 3-day windows.
- Six rank modes — Switch between six modes to surface different types of positioning activity.
- Symbol drawer — Click any row to inspect the symbol's OI detail across four tabs (Overview, By Expiry, By Strike, Composition).
KPI summary cards
Four cards at the top give you a market-wide picture before you inspect any individual symbol:
| Card | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Symbols in scope | Total count of symbols in the filtered universe |
| 1D Builds | Number of symbols with positive 1-day OI change + the single largest build (symbol and absolute OI added) |
| 1D Unwinds | Number of symbols with negative 1-day OI change + the single largest unwind |
| Active rank | The currently selected rank mode label + count of rankable symbols after filters |
Rank modes
| Mode | What it surfaces |
|---|---|
| OI Change 1D | Largest absolute open-interest increase over 1 day. Spot where new contracts are being opened. |
| OI Change % 1D | Fastest-growing names by percentage over 1 day. Useful for catching unusual activity in smaller names. |
| OI Change 3D | Sustained build over a 3-day window — filters out single-day noise. |
| OI Change % 3D | 3-day growth rate, normalized for market cap differences. |
| OI Unwind 1D | Largest absolute decrease in open interest over 1 day. Spot where positions are being closed or expired. |
| OI Unwind % 1D | Fastest contraction by percentage over 1 day — useful for catching accelerated closing flow. |
Switch between modes instantly in the toolbar. The table re-ranks without losing your current symbol search or asset type filter.
Note on excluded symbols: Some symbols that match your current filter may be excluded from the ranked list if the required comparison snapshot is missing or the OI change is in the wrong direction for the selected mode. An exclusion notice tells you the count so you know what's hidden.
Table and sorting
The table is independently sortable by any column:
- Symbol, Asset type (Stock/ETF/Index), Snapshot Spot
- Current OI, OI Change 1D, OI Change % 1D, OI Change 3D, OI Change % 3D
Sorting by a column overrides the rank mode ordering. Reset via the toolbar to restore rank-based order.
Symbol drawer: four tabs of detail
Clicking any row (or entering a symbol in the toolbar lookup) opens the OI Change drawer. Four tabs organize the data:
Overview
High-level summary: symbol, snapshot date, current total OI, call/put OI split, 1D and 3D changes in both absolute and percentage. Also shows prior session dates used for each comparison.
By Expiry
A breakdown table grouped by expiration date. For each expiry: current OI (total, call, put), 1D change, 3D change. Use this to see whether OI build or unwind is front-loaded (near-term expirations) or spread across the curve.
By Strike
The most granular view: OI data per (expiry, strike) pair — total OI, call OI, put OI, and 1D/3D changes. Use this to identify specific strikes where positioning is concentrating.
Composition
A synthesized analysis of the OI structure across the symbol:
- Dominant tenor — FRONT (near-dated dominated), BACK (longer-dated), or BALANCED
- Dominant side — CALL, PUT, or BALANCED
- Concentration label — CONCENTRATED (top expiry holds most OI), MIXED, or DISPERSED
- Front expiry share — % of total OI in the nearest expiry
- Top expiry share — % of total OI in the single dominant expiry
- Call share — % of 1D OI change that came from calls
Data horizon and caveats
OI data comes from prior-close option chain snapshots:
- No intraday updates — Rankings reflect end-of-day OI, not live intraday changes.
- T+1 lag — If today is Tuesday, the latest data reflects Monday's close.
- Snapshot labeling — Every view shows the snapshot date so you can verify recency.
- Freshness indicator — The header shows how recently the cached snapshot was loaded ("Refreshed 5m ago") so you know when to refresh.
How to use it
Use OI Change Rank to build a watchlist of names with unusual positioning shifts, then cross-reference with other TradingFlow tools:
- OI Change Rank → identify symbols with large or unusual OI builds
- Option Trades → drill into flow detail for those names — strikes, premiums, sentiment
- GEX Screener → check gamma context — is the OI build happening near the call wall or flip zone?
- Market Rank → confirm if those names are also dominating options volume for the day
Where to find it
In TradingFlow, open OI Change Rank in the nav or go directly to /app/oi-change-rank. Select a rank mode, use the symbol search or asset type filter to narrow the universe, and open any row for detailed drawer analysis.
